Product Description

If you've ever paid off one credit card with another, thrown out a bill before opening it, or convinced yourself that buying at a two-for-one sale is like making money, then this silly, appealing novel is for you. In the opening pages of Confessions of a Shopaholic, recent college graduate Rebecca Bloomwood is offered a hefty line of credit by a London bank. Within a few months, Sophie Kinsella's heroine has exceeded the limits of this generous offer, and begins furtively to scan her credit-card bills at work, certain that she couldn't have spent the reported sums.

In theory anyway, the world of finance shouldn't be a mystery to Rebecca, since she writes for a magazine called Successful Saving. Struggling with her spendthrift impulses, she tries to heed the advice of an expert and appreciate life's cheaper pleasures: parks, museums, and so forth. Yet her first Saturday at the Victoria and Albert Museum strikes her as a waste. Why? There's not a price tag in sight.

It kind of takes the fun out of it, doesn't it? You wander round, just looking at things, and it all gets a bit boring after a while. Whereas if they put price tags on, you'd be far more interested. In fact, I think all museums should put prices on their exhibits. You'd look at a silver chalice or a marble statue or the Mona Lisa or whatever, and admire it for its beauty and historical importance and everything--and then you'd reach for the price tag and gasp, "Hey, look how much this one is!" It would really liven things up.
Eventually, Rebecca's uncontrollable shopping and her "imaginative" solutions to her debt attract the attention not only of her bank manager but of handsome Luke Brandon--a multimillionaire PR representative for a finance group frequently covered in Successful Saving. Unlike her opposite number in Bridget Jones's Diary, however, Rebecca actually seems too scattered and spacey to reel in such a successful man. Maybe it's her Denny and George scarf. In any case, Kinsella's debut makes excellent fantasy reading for the long stretches between white sales and appliance specials. --Regina Marler

Millions of readers have come to adore New York Times best-selling author Sophie Kinsella’s irrepressible heroine. Meet Becky Bloomwood, America’s favorite shopaholic – a young woman with a big heart, big dreams…and just one little weakness.

Becky has a fabulous flat in London's trendiest neighborhood, a troupe of glamorous socialite friends, and a closet brimming with the season's must-haves. The only trouble is that she can't actually afford it–not any of it.

Her job writing at Successful Savings not only bores her to tears, it doesn't pay much at all. And lately Becky's been chased by dismal letters from the bank –letters with large red sums she can't bear to read–and they're getting ever harder to ignore.

She tries cutting back. But none of her efforts succeeds. Becky's only consolation is to buy herself something ... just a little something....

Finally a story arises that Becky actually cares about, and her front-page article catalyzes a chain of events that will transform her life–and the lives of those around her–forever.

Sophie Kinsella has brilliantly tapped into our collective consumer conscience to deliver a novel of our times–and a heroine who grows stronger every time she weakens. Becky's hilarious schemes to pay back her debts are as endearing as they are desperate. Her "confessions" are the perfect pick-me-up when life is hanging in the (bank) balance.

  • A shopaholic loved it!!!
I bought this book on my way to a beach vacation when I was looking for a no-brainer! It kept me busy on the beach while my kids played in the sun. The author has portrayed the character of Rebecca Bloomwood very well. I myself am a big shopaholic like Rebecca minus the debts...thank God I know to live in my means.
I watched the movie too, but was not as impressed with it, still worth it if you absolutely loved the book and want to meet with the characters!...more info
  • stupid book
Sorry I bought this book. It's not worth the time reading. Quit 1/2 way thro it. The character is so stupid, and irresponsible. I like like-hearted books, but not this one....more info
  • Great book, but totally not like the movie
I read the book before the movie came out and absolutely loved it! The only reason I give it 2 stars is that being this book is a "movie tie-in" makes may lead people to believe that this book is like the movie. Well, it's not.

If you want a fun read, this is a great book. If you read the book and expect the same story line from the movie or vice versa, you'll be greatly disappointed. The book and the movie, kept separate, are each very entertaining. Tied in? No....more info
  • Fun, Fun, Fun
What can I say.. its a girly book with everyting in it to make it an enjoyable read:)...more info
  • Great read :)
I've heard a lot about the book and decided to pick it up since I heard they were making a movie. If you're into chick lit, I found it very amusing, funny, and easy to read. The book came in quickly and was in perfect condition....more info
  • Disappointed!
Our bookclub selected this for our October gathering. We were very disappointed with the book and the characters. There were many opportunities for character development ~ didn't happen. It required more than 100 pages to get to the first really humorous situation! And for all her dingbat antics, the heroine still got the job and the millionaire ~ go figure!

If you want to read something that will make you laugh out loud this is the book for you....written somewhat like the Bridget Jones collection..very entertaining, light read. All of us can relate to the struggles Rebecca has with her money I am sure. I have already read the next book in the collection. ...more info

  • Bloomin' Brilliant!
I am not big on shopping (I know some of you will be shocked to hear), but I LOVED this book! It's an easy read that keeps you entertained.

My sister had come to visit me in the States and could NOT put this book down. She would continually laugh out loud, while heartily recommending I read this book. I am a mum of two preschoolers and don't get much time to read, so I got a copy and decided to take it to the gym and read it while on the treadmill as I did my dreaded 30 minute walk. I ended up staying on the treadmill for 1 hour and didn't even realize it! I only got off because I had to pick up my daughters. The gym used to be a chore, but now I only allow myself to read the Shopaholic series when I go to the gym, as an incentive, I have been going religiously and stay on the treadmill for as long as I can! The book had me laughing out loud throughout, much to the annoyance of the serious `gym rat' puritans I'm sure....lol.

I have just finished Shopaholic Takes Manhattan (which was just as good) and will be starting on Shopaholic Ties the Knot at the gym tonight. As an added bonus I have lost 10lbs and reached my target weight, thanks to the help of Becky Bloomwood :). I don't know what I'm gong to do once I finish the series - my gym experience will certainly not be the same.

  • So Funny!
This book is like watching one of those extreme sports shows. You know that the skate boarder is going to crash and break his arm, but you can't turn away. It was so entertaining to listen to all of Becky's justifications for buying what she thought she needed. Becky Bloomwood is hilarious and one of the most entertaining characters I have ever encountered. I think most everyone can relate to Becky and her spending, I know I could. Even with all her faults I couldn't help but root for her, and I think you will too. I can't wait to read the next book in the series....more info
  • Hilarious from beginning to end!
I picked this book up for a little light entertainment, and I was quite simply blown away by the talent of the author, Sophie Kinsella! I was captured by her story and main character from the very beginning. Becky Bloomwood is the essence of the compulsive shopper's dark side that lingers in all of us. (Well, maybe not all of us -- but it sure lingers in me!)

Her plotting was intense! Every time I thought she had written herself into a corner, Ms. Kinsella brought the story to an even greater level of tension. Becky Bloomwood was perfectly drawn. As crazy as she was, I understood her every motivation -- even though I was cringing as she messed things up over and over again.

If you are searching for an escapist read that will thoroughly entertain you, I highly recommend Confessions of a Shopaholic.

The best recommendation I can give you is this: I've begun to order every single one of Sophie Kinsella's books from Amazon.com -- and I consider it money well spent! (Certainly, it's just what Becky would have done!!) ...more info
  • Funny as throwing gas on a fire
I thought this main character was very unlikeable and had very little redeeming qualities. What kind of journey did she travel? Was there any changes to her character? Of course not, because then Sophie Kinsella wouldn't have been able to do a whole slew of shopaholic books. I would have loved her a little if she had tried to take ownership for anything she did....more info
  • Poor, poor Becky
ANother recommendation, and right on the money (pun indeed intended). At first I thought I wouldn't be able to connect with the heroine, Becky, because she's just too flaky, but she sucked me in. The writing is fantastic, I read the book in one go. I had to find out that everthing would be alright, and now I can't wait fot the next installment of the series.
Kinsella is my new fav author!...more info

  • Walk do not run to go out and get this
I have to say this is one that you HAVE TO Log on and Buy this on Amazon, go ahead, don't wait..... If you like fun, lighhearted reading this is a sure hit...

Rebecca is a shopaholic tried and true, she has things that she buys because they are a great buy, and things that still have the tags on them... This book will have you laughing out loud, even if you are NOT a shopper....

Sophie Kinsella has a quick wit in her writing of this book and the character of Rebecca. You will not want to put it down and the great thing is you can continue to read the shopaholic series long after this one.......more info
  • Hilarious Book!
At first I did not think I would like this book because I did not get a lot of the British talk in it. But once I got through the 3rd chapter, I was HOOKED! It is a light read, incredibly funny, and interesting. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!...more info
  • Confessions of a Shopaholic

  • Hilarious
I couldn't put this book down. I laughed so much, my husband had to read it to find out what was so funny. He enjoyed it as well. We tried to complete the series, but I couldn't get through the 2nd book. After the first, you know what's to follow. ...more info

  • Quick Fun Read, Very addicting!!!
I got the Kindle 2 and this was the first book I read on it. I was hooked after reading Confessions of a Shopaholic. It was easy to read, funny and just very cute. I definitely recommend this book to the ladies who want a good laugh and to forget about everything else. Enjoy! I know I sure did. I read the whole series in a month because I was so addicted. ...more info
  • Irritating protagonist...
I bought this book because it seemed like a topic I would enjoy. Instead, I could barely finish this book out of sheer irritation.

Normally, when I find a book I like, I cannot stop reading. The world comes to an abrupt halt. I can usually finish the book withing a day!

With this particular book, I kept slamming the book down time after time whenever Rebecca did something stupid. This character has no morals and no redeeming characteristics. It took me over a month to finish reading it, and this was only after I forced myself. Don't waste your time or money unless you like reading about selfish, self centered liars as main characters. ...more info
  • Don't Panic ! It is just a visa bill ..A very Large scary bill
Rebecca Bloomwood, is a 25 year Financial journalist, whose boss seems to appreciate her exuberant personality and often sends her to cover important press conferences all over London.
She also rubs shoulders with the most fabulous A - list friends, living in this spectacular flat in London's trendiest neighborhood (Her boss would kill to live in her building,But HE can't afford it.)Her blue collar parents are so proud that she is done so well for herself, Her friends and colleagues are green with envy.
    Oh, If they only knew.
The only problem is her so called life is nothing more than one big fat sham.
Although she loves her job, she doesn't really make all that much, and her friends are all buying houses and getting married and moving up in the world.
Poor Becky can't even get her current boyfriend to have sex with her, no matter what she does to try to pique his interests.
She is literally wallowing in debt trying to keep up with all of her friends( who can truly afford this lifestyle) To top it all off,Rebecca is stalked by creditors night and day, and is terrified of answering the phone.
Sometimes when she has had a really bad day, she dumps all the mail that looks like bills into the sewer drain or someone else's dumpster and forgets all about it.

Whenever she gets down about all these things, she goes shopping.
For clothes mostly, and what a wardrobe she has. I listened to the book on tape and that was half the fun of this book, hearing the narrator bring life to the high fashion designer clothes Becky buys and her rationalizations on why she needs them.

My favorite scene in the book is where Becky falls in love, with a silk blue scarf with this enormous price tag that she just can't live without. She can't find her credit card and she is completely broke so she begs people at the financial conference she is covering for money under the pretense that she has a sick Aunt Ermentrude dying in the hospital who just has to have this scarf.

One of the speakers at the conference, a very successful Financier,by the name of Luke, overhears all this and gives her the money for it. Becky is so happy until she runs into him and she is wearing Aunt Ermentrude's scarf.
I adore this book, because I think a lot of people can relate to Becky's want to fit in,even it means ruining your credit for years ,and even decades to come.
A lot of people on here classify her as an idiot.
I thought she was a very charming ,smart young woman ,who turns into huge little girl whenever she happens to end up in the mall.( I don't quite get this way with clothes, but put me in a good restaurant or a bookstore and I am a goner.)The only really bad thing I can say is Sofia Kinsella writes in British English. What I mean by this is ,she uses a lot of English slang . She also writes everything in English currency, which makes it hard to understand if your aren't from Great Britian.
Here are a couple of basic definitions
pound is a dollar and fifty cents
quid is slang for a dollar,
    loo is the toilet
    p----d means drunk
    Knackered means exhausted

If you really like stories with happy endings and lots of belly laughs and silly heroine, please give it a try....more info
  • Becky Is Not So Different
As demonstrated by my rating, I adored this book. I was on a plane home from Iraq, wanted some tasty brain candy, and that is exactly what I got. The hours flew by as I laughed, gasped, and thought to myself, "Wow, this girl is a hot mess; what is she going to do next?"

On a deeper note, I have read several reviews in which people rant about how despicably horrid Becky is and what they would do if they met someone like her in real life. I think we should keep some perspective. Becky is a FICTIONAL character, and, as such, she is an over-the-top caricature of a real life consumerism addict. While journeying through her mind, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the massive quantities of lavish excess, but if people are truly honest with themselves, they will see that there is a lot of Becky in many people throughout our society. Becky has good intentions, and there is never any malice in her erratic actions. She is simply the quintessence of poor impulse control; she can never see beyond the moment and her fantasies of who she can be if she has that Denny and George scarf/Vera Wang dress/Angel bag RIGHT NOW. Think about it; who among us doesn't know someone who has a Harley Davidson that they never ride? Who bought a brand new GM Hummer that costs nearly half their paycheck instead of a certified secondhand Mitsubishi Montero? Who pays the minimum monthly payment with super high interest on the $3000 surround sound system instead of saving for it? Who has a dress that they have never fit into because it was such a great sale? Many of us have done this after somehow convincing ourselves that these things were "necessities." And we didn't think too hard about whether we were staying within our means; we were thinking "OMG, everyone will call me the girl/guy with the [insert your luxury item here]."

Bottom line, if you want a fluffy, delightful morsel of enjoyment, read this book. When you are done, take a few minutes to see what you can learn from Becky's mistakes (I know I did). Confessions of s Shopaholic satisfies on many levels....more info
  • I thought it might be fun...but!--

I bought this to calm some airplane jitters three days after the "miracle on the Hudson" crash...but after trying to read it on the plane, I decided my 'In Style' magazine had more substance.

I didn't think Diary of Bridget Jones was all that good, but Becky Bloomwood makes Bridget Jones look like a stable, kind person. Also, the author rips off so many scenes from BJ that all one can think is, "Oh, Helen Fielding wrote this cooking /television/repeated motif (of BJ's lost weight turned into Becky's lost bank account) so, so much better!

It's just bad, all the way around. ...more info
  • Shopaholic is a Shopper OD!
Funny that I read the first book of the series LAST. This is a very well written book and it keeps up the charactors with lots of wit and hilarity. Funny thing is; alot of women are shopaholics. We sometimes shop for sport; sometimes we shop because we crave color and visual stimulation. But the end effect of buying something new is a lovely, warm-feeling after-glow that is similar to experiencing some sort of triumph.
The book is great, then I saw the movie.
The movie is a bit better than the book. It's more realistic, and it teaches everyone a lesson about spending when one doesn't have money, or a well-paying job. What I didn't like about this book is it villifies the bill collector; the poor sap from the bank is made out to be the bad guy, when it's not he who did the whirwind, spendaholic shopping.
That's the thing - - - there's a moral and a lesson in these stories, but somehow the main protagonist, Rebecca Bloomwood, escapes her due process.
I am glad to have read the entire thing, but I am equally relieved that I am finished with the series.
I have learned a valuable lesson when it comes to my own shopping. It can't go on like there's no tomorrow.
It can't continue like there's a Money Tree growing in my back yard.
I has to come to an end, it has to remain reasonable, and it shouldn't be treated like something that's a joke.
The country is in a major recession, and we all have to work hard to save our financial resources.
This is a great country with the strongest financial resources and we are being tested in these modern times.
It's good to save, build a nest egg and hold onto good investments.
Style trends come and fashion changes from month to month.
A strong savings account is a greater thing to strive for. That's what these books have taught me....more info

  • Mindless entertainment
Although "Shopaholic" was in some ways charming and funny, for the most part I found it formulaic and trite. The plot was full of cliches about a ditzy girl who makes good despite all her pitfalls, and Darcyish figures who turn out to be the real deal in the end. I felt like it was a rip-off of "Bridget Jones" in a big way; but where Helen Fielding's falling apart heroine makes me feel better, Becky makes me feel worse. Her problems are solved through the most boring deus-ex-machina possible, leaving those of us with spending problems and debt with an unrealistic MMM solution (Make More Money for those of you who haven't read the book). Like I'm supposed to suddenly land a job in TV? The letters concerning Becky's debt sprinkled through were admittedly cute, but it didn't erase the knot I felt throughout my entire reading. This book made me want to stop reading and take back that pair of shoes. I suppose that's a positive thing, but shouldn't I have wanted to finish the book before returning the shoes? I recommend this book to women with not much time on their hands, not much interest in literature, and a high tolerance for sympathetic discomfort. But for even slightly more serious readers I would not really suggest it....more info

  • Love, Love, Love this book
Bridget Jones, meet Legally Blonde. The story of a seemingly airheaded fashionista who rises to the occasion when confronted with a problem bigger than her own credit card bills. This was an absolutely delightful book. A must-read for every teenage diva and young woman who hasn't yet learned the basics of money management (and those of us who have grown up and remember what it was like to be young and stupid). I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm sure I'll be disappointed. It will be next to impossible to capture this adorable heroine. This is what reading for pleasure is all about. Loved it!...more info
  • I Had Really High Hopes...
Knowing how hugely popular this series of books are and seeing the trailer for the movie, I was really excited to dive into this story. However, I began to cringe after the first couple of chapters. I was unable to connect to the main character, Rebecca. I don't understand that whole shopping thing, and I don't know the difference between Versace and LouisVitton. I kept thinking to myself, "How is it possible for someone to be so naive and out of control?" I forced myself to finish the book, and I have to say that it does get better after the climax of all her problems. The chemistry between her and her intended through the novel is also intriguing, but it left me really wanting more. Although it bothers me immensely, I will not be reading other books from the Shopaholic series....more info
  • Dreadful, horrible, awful, terrible, stinky, horrifying, worst book ever!
I picked up this book for a recent plane ride because it looked cute and is a bestseller. That said, I don't think I even have the right words to express how much I hated it (and yes, I finished it, though I don't know why exactly -- bordedom, I guess).

Kinsella is an adequate writer, no doubt. But Becky has got to be one of the dumbest, most annoying, positively IRRITATING "heroines" I've ever had the displeasure of reading about. Why is this a bestseller? Why is she so beloved? Why is this book funny? I just don't. Get. It. I don't get what's cute about a lying moron who can't get her s--t together. I don't get what's cute about a compulsive spender who can't control herself and is extremely selfish to boot. I don't get what's that interesting about well, shopping. Doesn't she have any other hobbies? If Becky were someone I knew in real life, she'd be the sorry person whom we all laughed at behind her back. I'm outraged that this flightly little twit is considered a literary hero when all I wanted to do was reach into the pages and shake her until her tissue paper for brains fell out. Blech. ...more info

I've read this book twice now and every time I find myself enjoying it more and more. What woman hasn't at one time or another found herself in Becky Bloomwood's position? There's a shopaholic in all of us even if we aren't quite as obsessed as Becky is. You'll find yourself laughing as she manages her way through new situations at every turn of the page and wondering just what she will do next! This is a must read....more info
